Education Education Track

With the marked advances in computational speed and memory of modern computers which are generally available to large numbers of people at acceptable cost, modeling and simulation is starting to appear in the lexicon of K-12 and undergraduate educational programs. For example:

  • Modeling has been singled out in the National Research Council's (NRC) draft of Next Generation Science Standards (July 2010);
  • Modeling and simulation was listed among the dozen big ideas by the National Nanotechnology Initiative in a recent workshop devoted to identifying K-12 content standards;
  • An NSF Blue Ribbon panel in 2006 declared that "computer simulation has become indispensable to the development of all other technologies" and "promises to revolutionize the way engineering and science are conducted in the twenty-first century";
  • The Commonwealth of Virginia and a number of other states have recently included modeling and simulation in their state science content standards for experimental investigation and observation.

The purpose of this track is to provide educators with information on contemporary and emerging capabilities of modeling and simulation. We seek papers that address M&S in four major educational areas:

  1. Use of modeling and simulation as part of a toolkit for K-12 inquiry-based science teaching and learning;
  2. Use of modeling and simulation as a part of scientific investigation in both grades K-12 and undergraduate coursework;
  3. Use of modeling and simulation in both K-12 and post-secondary career and technical education (CTE);
  4. Serious games and game-based learning. The track chairs are requesting papers that address any of the four areas listed.

This track is aimed at K-16 educators, administrators, and policy-makers.
